Vaccinations
Annual Vaccinations for Animals
Annual vaccinations are an essential part of preventive veterinary care designed to protect pets from contagious and potentially life-threatening diseases. These vaccines stimulate the animal’s immune system to recognize and defend against specific pathogens, helping to prevent illness if exposure occurs.
During an annual vaccination appointment, your veterinarian will review your pet’s health history, lifestyle, and risk factors to determine which vaccines are needed. Core vaccines—those recommended for all pets—protect against the most serious and widespread diseases, while non-core vaccines are administered based on your pet’s environment, travel habits, and exposure risks.
For dogs, core vaccines include Rabies, DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza), Leptospirosis, and Bordetella.
For cats, core vaccines include Rabies, and FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia), and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV).
Optional vaccines may protect against diseases like Lyme disease and Canine Influenza for dogs and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) for cats over two years old, depending on exposure risk.
Vaccination schedules may vary based on species, age, medical history, and vaccine type—some vaccines require yearly boosters, while others may last longer.
Importance:
- Disease Prevention: Protects pets from serious and often fatal infectious diseases that are still present in the environment.
- Public Health Protection: Prevents zoonotic diseases, such as rabies, that can spread from animals to humans.
- Cost-Effective Care: Preventing disease through vaccination is far less costly and stressful than treating advanced illness.
- Legal Compliance: Many areas require up-to-date rabies vaccination by law to ensure public safety.
- Comprehensive Health Check: Annual vaccination visits provide an opportunity for a full physical exam, early detection of illness, and discussion of diet, behavior, and parasite control.
- Long-Term Health: Strengthens your pet’s immune defense and promotes a longer, healthier life.
